United Airlines grounds flights nationwide due to tech failure
United Airlines grounded all mainline flights across the United States on Wednesday evening due to a technical malfunction affecting the airline's weight and balance computer system, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
"Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports," the airline said in a statement. "We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations."
The disruption led to a nationwide ground stop, affecting major United hubs including San Francisco International Airport, Chicago O'Hare, Newark, Denver and Houston.
As of late Wednesday, at least 827 United flights were delayed and 23 were canceled, according to data from FlightAware.
Flights already in the air continued to their destinations, and regional United Express services were not affected.
The airline confirmed the incident was not a cyberattack.
Customers traveling between Aug. 6-7 through 14 major domestic and international airports - including San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Frankfurt and Guam - are eligible for a travel waiver, United said in a message to customers.
While the airline reported that systems were coming back online, travelers were warned to expect delays through the night.
